Even if you’re not great at makeup.

If you take a scroll on Instagram rn, there’s one thing you’ll definitely see. No, not all the summer vacay pics from Mykonos and Positano—I’m talking about a cut crease. I mean, you’ve probably seen it on everyone from your favorite influencer to that girl you had English Lit class with in college.

So, what exactly is a cut crease?

Technically speaking, it’s when you define your eyelid crease by cutting across it with makeup (usually concealer or foundation). And the results are unreal, since a cut crease makes your eyes look even more open and adds depth and dimension.

But unless you’re a makeup pro, you might not know where to start when it comes to executing your own cut crease. Don’t stress—I watched YouTuber Chelsea Tresidder perfect a cut crease on her own eyes and then broke her process down for y’all into steps. I know, I’m too kind. If you want all the tips, tricks, and products that’ll help create the eye look of your dreams, keep reading.

Step 1: Primer

TBH, you should always use a primer when doing a cut crease—otherwise, what’s the point, because you want that sh*t to stay. In short: It’ll keep you from having to do constant touch-ups (#Blessed). Tap on an eyeshadow primer with a sponge or your fingers. If you don’t have a primer, NBD. Simply use a concealer or foundation instead, and set it with a powder to keep everything in place.

Step 2: Eyeshadow Base

Next up is the base. Blend a dark-brown eyeshadow into your eyelid crease and wing it out. If you want to take the color up a notch, blend a light-brown eyeshadow on top to make the color pop more.

Step 3: Cut Your Crease

Okay, so this is the hardest part of the tutorial, but you can handle it. You’re going to need three key products to make the magic happen: a flat concealer brush, a thin eyeliner brush, and a cream stick foundation.

Swipe your flat concealer brush across the top of a stick foundation (to load it up with product) that’s a couple shades lighter than your skin tone, then apply a thick layer over your crease. Next, look up toward the ceiling for a couple of seconds (sounds weird, but it works). Clean up the lines with a thin eyeliner brush, then use the flat brush to cover the rest of your eyelid with foundation. Don’t forget to dust a setting powder over your lids once you’re done to lock the look in place.

Step 4: Shimmer Eyeshadow

Tap a shimmery eyeshadow onto your lids with a tightly packed brush. Go ahead and layer it on—you can never have enough glitter.

Step 5: Black Liquid Eyeliner

Create a cat eye and line your top lashes with a black liquid eyeliner.

Step 6: False Eyelashes

Slip on some falsies to take your eye look to the next level.
